Last year at this date, I published my first article on Medium. At that time, I was evacuated from the California wildfire while receiving rejection after months of interviewing with my dream company. At the lowest point, I made the best decision to start writing on Medium, the platform that helped me the most throughout the interview preparation process. One year later, I have published 33 articles and was rewarded as the top 1000 writer twice. I want to use this article to share my journey at Medium and express my gratitude towards all my readers.
When I first started writing, I know nothing about views, followers, and earnings. I would only get a few views and just hope that at least one of the few readers benefited from reading my articles. After publishing several articles, editors from different publications reached out to me, and I learned publishing articles with large publications increases views, by a lot. Then my favorite publication TDS reached out to me and helped me publish one of my articles with them. For the first time, I saw my article getting over 300 views and members spent over an hour reading my article, and what I have made from writing covers the membership fee I pay for Medium!
For the first month of serious writing, I got 9 followers. The views and followers started growing really fast when I published the Data Science Interview Preparation Toolkit series. One day I woke up and saw one of my articles got over 10K+ views for one day. Readers reached out to me by leaving comments on my articles and adding me on LinkedIn. Seeing all these cheerful messages makes me realize as long as my article has helped one reader, then all my efforts did not go in vain, and that’s the beauty of knowledge sharing.
In the beginning, I am writing in the fields I am familiar with. Motivated by the growing fans, I started to write articles in various fields. Write outside of my comfort zone keeps me learning new things and always inspires me with new article ideas. I am also writing in different styles.
